Do Braces Hurt?
Orthodontic therapy uses appliances to move the teeth with gentle pressure. When braces are first placed, when aligners are first inserted or when adjustments are made, your teeth and gums may feel tender. The amount of discomfort varies from patient to patient, but usually does not last for more than a few days.
To help you get through the discomfort, we have the following suggestions:
- After braces are placed you may have general soreness of the lips and cheeks until you adjust to the appliances. We will show you
have to use soft wax to cover your braces in a sore area. Your teeth may be sore and tender following placement of the braces as well as some of the subsequent adjustment appointments. This type of tenderness is normal with tooth movement. - Rinsing with warm salt water( one teaspoon of table salt added to half a glass of warm water)
- Tylenol, Ibuprofen or whatever analgesic your family prefers will
also relieve discomfort. - A diet of soft foods during this time is recommended.
Slight loosening of the teeth during treatment is normal and should not alarm you. Your teeth must first slightly loosen before they can be
orthodontically moved to a new position.
The success of treatment largely depends on you!!!
- Your responsibility is to comply with treatment as directed by your orthodontist.
- Avoid foods that can be damaging to the appliances.
- Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly.
- Once each day (preferably at bedtime) rinse with fluoride and spend a few moments in front of a mirror checking your braces to make sure they are clean, free of plaque, and in good condition.
